BSRC Aquatics Expansion & Renovation
The Health & Wellbeing of our community is very important.
This investment improves the accessibility for all demographics of our community.
These are extremely important investments that need to be made for our community.
Providing these amenities for our current residents, as well as attracting future residents, ensures we stay up to date with our facilities.
Beginning with the 2017 - 2021 Council and continuing with the 2021 - 2025 Council, we began down the path of defining what was needed to keep our recreation facilities current.
Your past 2 councils went through a number of exercises in order to come to a sensible project that High River could afford. Working with recreation consultants, studying other facilities and simply looking at what we truly need vs our wants and dreams. We looked at everything from $110 million facilities with all the bells and whistles to $5.5 million outdoor aquatic facilities. The question came down to “what do we need & what can we afford ?”. It is not simply the capital costs involved with constructing the facility, but we also need to be aware of what it costs to operate the built facility.
This project will provide us with an expanded year-round aquatics facility, complete with a beach entry leisure pool, waterslide, spray features, new hot tub, and a smaller lap pool for lessons, etc. The existing lane pool will remain. As well, the project includes a much-needed renovation to our reception and lobby area of the recreation centre.
FUNDING THE PROJECT
The project has a total budget, including contingency of $26,793,922.00.
Funding will be allocated from:
Town of High River - Reserves - $13,797,566
Profit from SAFRP (Flood Property Sales on Riverside Drive and High View Gate) - $1,000,000
Provincial Grants (MSI & LGFF) - $11,996.356
We have also received a generous donation of $50,000 towards the project.
Because we had the funds available to pay for this project, there has been no tax increase required for our residents and businesses.
Much like the addition of the fieldhouse in 2012, the aquatics expansion keeps our facility providing current needs for High River.
We are a small community of 14, 897 people - this project gives us what we need and what we can afford.
We’ve dreamt enough - it was time to make it happen.
